Most of the terriers we rescue from local animal shelters are there because they ran away from home and their owners didn't come looking for them. Wires are runners and they are curious and if they can they will take off to explore! Many others are taken to shelters and turned in because the other didn't know what they were getting into. They didn't take the time to find out about the Wire Fox Terrier or the Airedale and the amount of work entailed in caring for and training them. They are both wonderful breeds and great family pets, but you must know what it's like to live with them before considering purchasing or adopting a terrier.
Wire Fox Terriers are very active and very demanding of attention. Their curious nature can get them into things. They are very smart, but will only learn what they are motivated to learn. If you are looking for a mellow, "eager to please dog," the terrier breeds may not be for you! They are active and independent and not known for winning obedience championships! A high percentage of dogs of all breeds that are turned into animal shelters are there not because of what they did, but because their owners had unreasonable expectations of them. Be sure that the Wire Fox Terrier or the Airedale is going to fit into your lifestyle before adopting one.

Terrier breeds are typically independent thinkers. Where a working or sporting breed wants to please you and works hard to do whatever you want, a terrier is not that impressed with your wishes. If there is nothing more important happening at the time, he will come when called, but not if there is something to sniff or chase or hunt. The smaller terrier breeds often work underground and so digging can be a normal behavior for them. They are tenacious, independent, and very intelligent dogs. They are always curious about what is happening, always wanting to be with you and in on anything that is going on. Is this the type of dog that you want to and can live with? They will not change! This is what they are like. They must always be in a securely fenced yard when not on a leash. The entire family has to be aware that a terrier will run and not come back. He will run for the pure joy of running! If you are looking for a "well behaved dog," these are not the breeds for you. If you don't mind having your dog make a fool of you and you have a great sense of humor, then these dogs may be just what you are looking for!
