February 27th, 2010 - ATRA Dogs to be Featured at Earth Dog Trials

Our thanks to Jillian Miller who is active with her  Wire Fox terrier, Lexi, in the American Working Terrier Association. Jillian has compiled a poster featuring the pictures of our Rescues and information about our Association to be displayed at the trials being held on March 13 and 14 at Whittier Narrows.

Entitled, "Give a Dog a Bone," the poster cleverly and concisely promotes the Rescue and conveys our need for homes and for donations to help to provide for our dogs.

More information about the trials can be found at:

http://duffyscavern.org/Earthe_dogges.htm.

Jillian was also instrumental in re-homing a Wire Fox terrier named Snickers who had to leave his very ill owner in San Juan Capistrano. Snickers went straight to his new home without touching down at the Rescue! Thanks, Jillian!

February 14th, 2010 - A Valentine for Rescue

On Valentine's Day we received a gift in the form of help from four volunteers, three of them were new to assisting us, one was a seasoned volunteer.

Our long time helper, Jill, pulled our latest Wire, Dolly, from the Orange County Shelter on Saturday, February 13th. The Shelter did a fine job of grooming Dolly but Jill put on the finishing touches and bathed her and gave her a soft bed for the night.

The next day Dolly was transported up to Rescue by Connie and Warren.

Nikita was also transported that day by Cindy who also kindly housed him overnight.

MANY THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP!

February 06th, 2010 - Donation Thanks

Our most recent donation came from Cindy, in honor of her dog, Sophie who was rescued with the help of ATRA Volunteer, Lee Eckholm (now helping Wires in the Midwest area!)

Sophie was rescued at the age of seven months from a filthy backyard where she was confined. Beautiful Sophie has been loved and adored by Cindy for seven years now and wanted to help out some of her fellow Wires who are waiting at the Rescue for a home. A big thank you to Cindy and Sophie!

February 06th, 2010 - Maggie

We recently received the sad news that Maggie, beloved Airedale of Bob Rosenfarb, passed away on February 6, 2010 at the age of ten and a half. We send our condolences to Bob and thank him for his kind words. They helped to remind us that our work to rescue and adopt  terriers, while often difficult, is also  appreciated and meaningful.

Bob wrote,

"Having Maggie for the past nine years was truly one of the greatest joys of my life. There are no words to express how much I loved her and how much I will miss her. She made every day of our time together happy, funny and filled with love. She was an amazing girl who seemed to love everyone.....I am writing this letter to thank you for bringing me my Maggie. When you dropped her off I never could have imagined...how great a gift you were giving me. Thank you, Ruth, for giving me my special girl. I will never forget her and never stop loving her."

Thank you, Bob, for taking in a rescued Airedale, giving her a wonderful home and giving her a second chance to love and be loved!

February 03rd, 2010 - ATRA Rescue Dog "Riley" Made It to Broadway!

Riley's tale of near stardom in the Broadway musical (flop)  Nick and Nora is detailed in Chapter 11 of the book, Broadway Tails, by Bert Bertoni,a trainer who rescues dogs and trains them to appear on stage, coauthored with Jim Hanrahan.

Bertoni is best known for training all of the dogs for the Annie musicals. The book was published in 2008.

One of his challenges for Nick and Nora was to find a purebred Wire Fox Terrier to play Asta. Another challenge was to find a Wire that could be trained for work on stage!

Here's an excerpt from Chapter 11, entitled "Outfoxed:"

"I...was put in touch with Abandoned Terrier Rescue Association. It is a fox and Airedale terrier rescue...run by Ruth Millington...There were terriers everywhere! "

(This was in 1991 and, now 19 years later, we have a new batch of  rescued terriers  needing adoption!)

Bertoni took Riley who was a stray from the Los Angeles streets. He was an escape artist who did whatever he wanted and who frustrated and amused Ruth by "outfoxing" her.

Riley's adventures as well as those of other rescued dogs who became "showbiz superstars" make for a great read!

February 03rd, 2010 - Partying at the Rescue

A birthday dinner at the Rescue is not for the faint hearted for there are many Wires who wait  patiently for a morsel to drop or for the unwary to look the other way. The not-so-patient may take matters into their own paws (or mouths!)

Tom Millington is pictured at one of his past birthday celebrations with some adoring fans  (of food or Tom?!) doing their best to wait patiently!
