August 15th, 2011 - Ruth Celebrates a Birthday

 Ruth celebrated a milestone birthday!

Family, friends, volunteers and, of course, the Wires gathered to wish her well. And, to wish her MANY more since, without her, our Wires would be in desperate straits!

If you would like to honor Ruth with a  donation tribute, she would be very touched  and grateful!

Ruth laughs in the face of age!  (volunteer Jillian Miller in the back ground)

Ruth's birthday cake featuring Roscoe, our most recently adopted Wire. (Ruth drove all the way to Temecula to deliver him to a fabulous home!)

Hope springs eternal for Wire Fox Terrier, Princess as she waits for a morsel to drop but as the cake is closely guarded by Ruth and Roberta (secretary of the Board)

February 07th, 2011 - In Memory of Dylan

We wish to acknowledge and thank Christine Humphrey for her donation in memory of Dylan whom she adopted from us in 1995. Dylan recently "moved over" and made room for the adoption of Spike (now Winston) and who went home with Christine yesterday.

Dylan was a special boy who will remain forever in our hearts!

February 05th, 2011 - Treats for the Rescue Dogs

When the Bailys visited the Rescue, volunteer Nanci Powell was also there. They all brought treats and the Wires knew it! Jenny sniffed them out and tried to squeeze through the gate to get them. Others jumped for joy or lined up politely (sort of!).Enjoy the photos of the Wires enjoying treats!

There are also new and great photos of Milou and April, too! See them under their  biographies.

February 05th, 2011 - Help Bring Toby Home!

We received this sad news from Peter Noll. Toby is a beautiful boy who was a rescue from Tulsa,OK. We are hoping that he will miraculously make back home to his loving family:

"Toby got out of our house January 20th from our home in Glendale on the border with Eagle Rock in Los Angeles.   He is microchiped with a Home Again Chip and has two tags, a red one with his name and our numbers and his rabies tag from our last home in Cleveland, OH.  We recently moved here from Ohio.  His photos are attached.   Thank you for your help and any other suggestions you have for our search.

January 30th, 2011 - A "Senior" with a Spring in his Step

Scott and Deanna Bailey came to visit the Rescue recently and captured this photo of Milou greeting Scott at the gate!

Even NikNak and Ginger watch in amazement at the spring in Milou's step!

And folks, this is an 8 year old Wire! Are you sure you just must have that two year old? Many of our Wires are active through 12 years of age and it is not uncommon for them to live to 17. Please consider adopting one of our sweet older Wires. Many of them are already trained and will just need a refresher and some love  and attention from you!

In the second photo below, Milou and NikNkak seem to be anxiously waiting for their friend Nanci? more treats? escape? their forever home?

January 05th, 2011 - Happy New Year:)New Adoption Fees Necessary:(

All of us at ATRA wish our friends, adopters, and benefactors a happy 2011.

We graciously acknowledge all the generous donations we received especially those most recent holiday ones.

Despite your generosity, it is necessary to raise our adoption fees to help cover the rising costs of veterinary care, food, shelter fees and general upkeep for the dogs. This is the first time ATRA has raised its adoption fee. We are now asking for $300 instead of $250. We know that all who love our Wires understand the reasons for our asking for just a bit more on their behalf!

November 11th, 2010 - Houdini Wires Home for Halloween

We're calling Sophie and Bob our Houdini Wires because they disappeared  with their new family  just in time for Halloween and before we even had an opportunity to list them on our website!

They're getting along fine and enjoyed tricks and treats in their new home!

June 10th, 2010 - URGENT!!!! HELP NEEDED!!! SOS!!!!

To all Terrier lovers, prospective adopters, former adopters, friends, website browsers:This ATRA bulletin is being added without Ruth's knowledge or permission because she is too humble (and proud) to ask for assistance.

Although we all are facing some financial hardships, the Rescue is facing dire hardship. Ruth and her husband, Tom, have supported the Rescue on their own for years with some help from donations. Donations have dropped considerably and Ruth and Tom along with their devoted helpers, Tomas and Rosie are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.

Please, if you can make ANY monetary donation, no matter how small, it will help and be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!!

Sheila     ATRA Volunteer

June 10th, 2010 - Farewell to our Ruby

It was with much sadness and many tears that we said good-bye to Ruby today. A sweet gem of an Airedale, Ruby was a survivor of  mammary cancer and the indifference of neglectful owners. Ruby's age and health history did not bode well for her getting adopted and she quietly adjusted to life at the Rescue--a gentle lady in a sea of  Wirey mischief. She died peacefully in Ruth's arms when there was no longer anything more the vet could do for her. We will miss her quiet presence and the gaze of her soulful eyes. Rest now, Ruby. We loved you so much!

May 20th, 2010 - In Memory of Maggie

We received the sad news that Maggie, beloved Airedale of Bob Rosenfarb, passed away on February 6, 2010 at the age of ten and a half. We send our condolences to Bob and thank him for his kind words. They helped to remind us that our work to rescue and adopt  terriers, while often difficult, is also  appreciated and meaningful.

Bob wrote,

"Having Maggie for the past nine years was truly one of the greatest joys of my life. There are no words to express how much I loved her and how much I will miss her. She made every day of our time together happy, funny and filled with love. She was an amazing girl who seemed to love everyone.....I am writing this letter to thank you for bringing me my Maggie. When you dropped her off I never could have imagined...how great a gift you were giving me. Thank you, Ruth, for giving me my special girl. I will never forget her and never stop loving her."

Thank you, Bob, for taking in a rescued Airedale, giving her a wonderful home and giving her a second chance to love and be loved!

Thank you, too,  for your generous donation to the Rescue in memory of your Maggie.

April 17th, 2010 - Farewell to our Morgan

We had to say good-be to Morgan, a sweet, undemanding Airedale who spent the last five years  of his life at the Rescue. He became pals with Annie and Josie, he loved to eat, and take naps. He was a dignified gent  who rose above the Wire drama that often took place around him. He was a good boy, a big Teddy bear of an Airedale who loved to be loved. We did our best to be his family.  We miss him and remember him with love.

February 27th, 2010 - Thanks to the First PayPal Clicker!

A big THANK YOU to Randy Monday, our first donor through the Website and PayPal. Many thanks, Randy, for thinking of our rescue dogs!

February 27th, 2010 - ATRA Dogs to be Featured at Earth Dog Trials

Our thanks to Jillian Miller who is active with her  Wire Fox terrier, Lexi, in the American Working Terrier Association. Jillian has compiled a poster featuring the pictures of our Rescues and information about our Association to be displayed at the trials being held on March 13 and 14 at Whittier Narrows.

Entitled, "Give a Dog a Bone," the poster cleverly and concisely promotes the Rescue and conveys our need for homes and for donations to help to provide for our dogs.   THANK YOU, JILLIAN FOR THE GENEROUS DONATION YOU SENT TO US AFTER THE EARTH DOG TRIALS!

More information about the trials can be found at:

http://duffyscavern.org/Earthe_dogges.htm.

Jillian was also instrumental in re-homing a Wire Fox terrier named Snickers who had to leave his very ill owner in San Juan Capistrano. Snickers went straight to his new home without touching down at the Rescue! Thanks, Jillian!

February 14th, 2010 - A Valentine for Rescue

On Valentine's Day we received a gift in the form of help from four volunteers, three of them were new to assisting us, one was a seasoned volunteer.

Our long time helper, Jill, pulled our latest Wire, Dolly, from the Orange County Shelter on Saturday, February 13th. The Shelter did a fine job of grooming Dolly but Jill put on the finishing touches and bathed her and gave her a soft bed for the night.

The next day Dolly was transported up to Rescue by Connie and Warren.

Nikita was also transported that day by Cindy who also kindly housed him overnight.

MANY THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP!

February 06th, 2010 - Donation Thanks

Our most recent donation came from Cindy, in honor of her dog, Sophie who was rescued with the help of ATRA Volunteer, Lee Eckholm (now helping Wires in the Midwest area!)

Sophie was rescued at the age of seven months from a filthy backyard where she was confined. Beautiful Sophie has been loved and adored by Cindy for seven years now and wanted to help out some of her fellow Wires who are waiting at the Rescue for a home. A big thank you to Cindy and Sophie!

February 03rd, 2010 - ATRA Rescue Dog "Riley" Made It to Broadway!

Riley's tale of near stardom in the Broadway musical (flop)  Nick and Nora is detailed in Chapter 11 of the book, Broadway Tails, by Bert Bertoni,a trainer who rescues dogs and trains them to appear on stage, coauthored with Jim Hanrahan.

Bertoni is best known for training all of the dogs for the Annie musicals. The book was published in 2008.

One of his challenges for Nick and Nora was to find a purebred Wire Fox Terrier to play Asta. Another challenge was to find a Wire that could be trained for work on stage!

Here's an excerpt from Chapter 11, entitled "Outfoxed:"

"I...was put in touch with Abandoned Terrier Rescue Association. It is a fox and Airedale terrier rescue...run by Ruth Millington...There were terriers everywhere! "

(This was in 1991 and, now 19 years later, we have a new batch of  rescued terriers  needing adoption!)

Bertoni took Riley who was a stray from the Los Angeles streets. He was an escape artist who did whatever he wanted and who frustrated and amused Ruth by "outfoxing" her.

Riley's adventures as well as those of other rescued dogs who became "showbiz superstars" make for a great read!

February 03rd, 2010 - Partying at the Rescue

A birthday dinner at the Rescue is not for the faint hearted for there are many Wires who wait  patiently for a morsel to drop or for the unwary to look the other way. The not-so-patient may take matters into their own paws (or mouths!)

Tom Millington is pictured at one of his past birthday celebrations with some adoring fans  (of food or Tom?!) doing their best to wait patiently!
