Name: Abby
Type: Wire Fox
We just received the great news that Abby has been adopted. She has joined three Wire pals, Maggie (15), Molly (9) and Max (7) and now has room to roam in Oceanside, CA. Her new mom, Jo, reports that Abby is a cutie who is fitting right in with the rest of the Wires.
Abby is pictured above in her new back yard and below, in an additional photo with her new buddy, Max.
COURTESY LISTING
Here is a great opportunity to do a good deed for a Wire who needs your help. Abby has had to leave her home and move into an apartment. Things aren't working out very well and her owner, who is now working long hours, thinks she deserves better: a home where someone can spend more time and a big yard that Abby is used to having to romp and play.
Yes, she is a typical Wire and still VERY active at an age when other breeds may slow down.
Abby is HOUSEBROKEN, good with most dogs, kids and, of course adults. She is active but submissive according to her owner. She loves to play, especially in a yard but also likes her walks and to cuddle.
Abby is spayed and current on her shots.
You may be wondering how old Abby is because we did not list her age as we typically do. That's because we did not want her eliminated from your consideration just because of her age. Yes, people do that quite a bit even though Wires are hardy and active well into the senior years when other breed may slow down. And, we have many sweet seniors who would love to live out their years in a home and not a Rescue (even though Rescue is like a home -- but with lots of brothers and sisters!)
According to her owner, Abby has no health issues, however, she has offered to pay any bills that Abby may incur!!! This is truly an ideal situation for someone who would like a companion Wire! And, who would be so kind as to help a Wire in need!
Abby is in La Mesa, CA 91942 with Jodi Webb. She is also listed on www.Rescueme.org
Jodi's phone number is: 619 248-6451
And, by the way...Abby is a young 12!

Name: Ace
Age: 2 Type: Wire Fox
Ace has been adopted!!! More information and pictures soon.
What happens in Vegas doesn't ALWAYS stay in Vegas!!!!!
Sadly, Ace and his brother Tripp were both surrendered by their owner to the Las Vegas SPCA. The reason given for the surrender is that the owner did not have enough time for them. Fortunately, they had some wonderful folks looking out for them who managed to quickly get them out of the Shelter and into a foster home in Orange, CA.
Tripp has been adopted but Ace is still waiting for his forever home. He was born March 19, 2009 and is weighing in at about 25 pounds. His foster mom reports that he is "eating like a horse" so he may put on a few more pounds.
He is a sweetheart with an endearing face and expression. While an independent boy (like most Wires), he also loves to give kisses and find a soft place to curl up and take a nap.
Ace is HOUSETRAINED, walks well on leash and knows most commands. He even listens well which is not what every Wire will do! And, he is learning to swim! He loves to crunch on carrots but peanut butter may be his favorite treat. He is a friendly little guy who is getting used to living with a cat and also learning to leave the chickens alone after getting a mouth full of fethers when one strayed too close!
Ace is neutered, mirochipped and current on his vaccinations.
Come and meet ACE. If you love and understand Wires, you won't be taking a chance with this boy. It's a gamble we're sure will pay off many times over!!!! (In Aces not spades!!!!)
If you would like to meet Ace, please fill out an application and e-mail it to Sheila at sheilacallaghan@verizon.net.

Name: Abbey
Age: 5-6 Type: Wire Fox
GREAT NEWS! Abbey has found a forever home with John and Christine Locksy. John is retired and his folks live with them so Abbey will never be alone! John and Christine are experienced Wire lovers and are undaunted by the potential challenges that Abbey's history posed. Initial reports indicate that Abbey is happily settling in, happy to be the ONLY dog and to have the run of the house with all sorts of beds and sofas to choose from for her snoozes. Thanks to John and Christine's patience, love and understanding, Abbey has a happy life ahead!
Abbey is pictured above with John and Christine ready to head south. In pictures below who can forget Abbey's Christmas climb?! Now she happily jumped into the Locksy's truck and posed with Christine, gave John a welcome"hug" and shows how she can sit patiently. Abbey was an adventure for her foster Mom who is thrilled she has found the perfect home. John and Christine wanted to give a home to a Wire who may be overlooked -- and that was Abbey!
Abbey reminded John and Christine of their Wire, Cassie who recently passed away. Sweet little Cassie was left at the dog park in Long Beach. A kind dog lover who was last to leave had observed her sitting at the gate watching the faces of people coming and going and waiting in vain for her owner. He found our Rescue and brought Cassie directly to our volunteer in Long Beach. She lived a happy nine years with the Locksys. In rescue parlance, we say that Cassie "moved over" to make room for Abbey who desperately needed the Locksy's love and understanding.
Just added: Abbey fresh from the groomers with a Valentine bow!
Abbey's Story:
Abbey came to us in October as a stray from the Orange County Animal Shelter. Abbey was unspayed and it appeared that she had been bred at least once. Her owners never came to claim her so she became ours. Abbey is currently in a foster home in Long Beach. Abbey is a sweet girl who is is valiantly overcoming her anxieties from being abandoned. She already knows how to sit on command! She is very agile and can dance and pirouette like a circus dog for her treats. Her agility, however, must be channeled for she is an escape artist whose escapades have delighted and amazed the neighbors and given her foster mom anxieties of her own! (See in the photos below how Abbey climbed atop the recycle bin one day!) She will need a Wire-safe home with vigilant guardians who can spend lots of time with her. Abbey will do best as the only dog. Abbey loves to go for walks and she walks very nicely using the Gentle Leader Easy Walk halter. As much as she loves to explore, she will also curl up by your side or at the foot of your bed. Abbey is healthy, current on shots and teeth cleaning. She was well-behaved at the groomer and the vet!

Name: Mac
Age: 8 Type: Airedale
Just in time for Christmas, it's Mac! This handsome 'Dale is a young 8 years old. He still has lots of Airedale energy, rambunctiousness and mischievousness. In fact, he has too much energy for his family who are busy with their recently added third child. He has been a great family dog but needs more attention than his current family can give him. His ideal new home would be able to take him on long runs and walks. Mac was born in St. Catherine's, Ontario, Canada in December, 2002. He is great with children although he is a jumbo-sized Airedale and could easily be too much for small children. He can get very excited and act like a big puppy so he will need help in learning some manners especially when he acts like he has some kangaroo in his genes! Mac (short for Macbeth) will love being in an active home where he can be the center of attention!

Name: Maxine
Age: 10 Type: Welsh
YIPEE! BEACUASE OF OUR WEBSITE, MAXINE WAS ADOPTED FROM BARTON KENNELS WHERE SHE WAS HOUSED!
Sweet "mama" Maxine is another puppy mill rescue. She is Robyn's mom. (See Robyn under Adopted Terriers) As is typical in puppy mills, Maxine was bred at a very young age and was never housebroken, However, her daughter Robyn was not housebroken either and quickly acclimated to training so most likely Maxine would, too! Despite the lack of care and love, she is nevertheless good with people and sweet-natured. She just turned ten years young this month. (We have her papers.) Given that Maxine has had years of mothering, she would do best as a single girl now or perhaps with a submissive male. Maxine has a clean bill of health and all shots but will need to be spayed before adoption. She is currently housed at Barton Kennels through the kindness of Rose Richards . If you would like to meet this special, pretty lady call Rose at 818-767-8990. They are located in Sun Valley.

Name: Seamus
Age: 4 Type: Lakeland
SEAMUS IS NOW PERCY. HIS DELIGHTED OWNER IS JULIE NEWSOME, A DEVOTED TERRIER LOVER AND SUPPORTER OF ATRA. HAVE FUN JULIE AND PERCY!
Handsome Seamus (that's Irish for James, by the way...pronounced Shay-mus) came to us as a Lakeland but we think that there may be some blarney going on and that he may have a bit of Irish terrier in him too. He certainly has the beautiful reddish coat like the Irish and he is a bit bigger than a standard Lakeland. However, his coat is more strawberry blond and is soft! Like the mascot of Notre Dame, he has a bit of the fightin' Irish in him, too, apparently. He was banned from his home and sent off to rescue for getting in a wee skirmish with another dog that shared his former home. While this is typical terrier behavior, Seamus was booted out of his master's bed and sadly banished from home. While it may be best that he be the only dog, he is actually quite the charmer. Although a bit shy at first, he is sweet and soon trusting and affectionate. He is HOUSEBROKEN,neutered, and is up to date on all his shots. He walks very well on leash and knows the "sit" command! He likes to ride in the car and SWIM, too! He is also reported to be good with children. What a catch for an understanding terrier home! This poor guy has got to be wondering what happened and when he will be sleeping in his master's bed again! Won't you be the one to invite this fine lad home? Sure, this sweet, goofy boy will make a fine companion for a terrier lover worthy of him!

Name: Cinder
Age: 2 Type: Airedale
Cinder has joined the Wire Fox terriers and has quickly become part of the gang. She has a sweet disposition and tolerates the "high Wire acts." She is very loving and playful. She follows Ruth everywhere -- and not just for a treat!
She is learning her manners as well as her way around the rescue. She has all the special qualities that make Airedales so wonderful and she comes with a complete, undocked tail so there is more of her to love! We named her Cinder because she still has her black points that she probably will keep and because we're hoping for a Cinderella story for her!
Check out the photo where Cinder is helping to organize the paperwork on Ruth's desk! She'd make a great special assistant!

Name: Burger
Age: 6 Type: Wire Fox
COURTESY LISTING PLEASE HELP ASAP!!! JULY 15, 2011: WE WERE JUST NOTIFIED THAT BURGER'S FAMILY HAS TO MOVE AND CANNOT TAKE HIM!!
Check Burger out on two new videos that our volunteer, Jillian Miller took and placed on ATRA's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AbandonedTerrierRescue) on August 3, 2011! Burger is fabulous at the dog park with other dogs AND does a very impressive "stay" demonstration--remarkable for any dog but especially for a WIRE!!
Burger is a handsome Wire whose family dynamics have changed and they have asked for help in finding him a terrier savvy home where more time can be devoted to him. His current family both work and go to school and Burger has grown increasingly insecure due to lack of attention and exercise. The ideal home would be someone who is at home or who can devote more time with him to help him feel loved and secure.Burger gets along with his current pal, a German shepard and does fine at the dog park. He walks well on leash. He does guard his toys and food so he would may do better as the only dog where he can have all the attention and not feel challenged about his possessions. However, as noted above, he did well with his German Shepard companion and recently at the dog park so the food and guarding issues may dissipate as he becomes more secure.
Burger currently has some anxiety but it seems to stem from being left alone for long hours. He receives medication for it but when he no longer has to spend long hours in his crate it would seem that many issues would take care of themselves. Attention and exercise as well as not having to use a crate would probably mean that Burger would be fine.
Burger is neutered and is located in Aliso Viejo. The phone number is: 949 697-8353. E-mail contact is: Ryan Lefman rlefmann@gmail.com. Ryan believes that once you meet Burger, you will love and appreciate him!
We sure hope there is an understanding Wire lover who will help Burger!
***********************************************************************************************************************************
We were just notified that Burger has a new family as of August 22. Hope to have more details soon. We are happy for him.

Name: Ariel
Age: 5 Type: Wire Fox
Ariel has been adopted and is off to Reno , Nevada to be loved by the Bear Family.
Ariel's Story:
Ariel is a petite sprite with a husky Lauren Bacall-like (de)bark! Like the character, Linus, from Peanuts, she drags a blanket with her wherever she goes! Ariel was recently rescued from a puppy mill situation in the Yucca Valley area so she is not yet completely housebroken. She is improving her manners and socialization, however, and is learning to love life outside of a cage.! Ariel was rescued along with April, her sister and Timmy to whom she was bred (but with whom she is not infatuated!)

Name: Charlie
Age: 8 Type: Wire Fox
THANKS TO DEBRA HAGER'S LOVE AND NETWORKING OF CHARLIE, HE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!
HE IS BACK IN SAN DIEGO IN A LOVING HOME AND WILL SEE HIS FRIENDS AT ACADEMY VET WHEN HE NEEDS THEIR CARE!
MORE NEWS AND PICTURES TO FOLLOW!
CHARLIE IS DEFINITELY A CHARGERS' FAN AND LOVING HIS NEW HOME! HERE'S THE UPDATE FROM VICTORIA AND BRADY:
"I wanted to share some photos of Charlie and let you know how he is doing. in his new home. The adjustment so far is going very well. He is little by little getting used to us leaving him when we go to work or the store. He does have some separation anxiety and we are working with his vet on training techniques to make his adjustment easier for him. We come home at lunch every day to walk him which he very much enjoys. I think as time passes, he will know that we are his family and are there for him and that he doesn't have to worry. During the time we are home, he is showered with love and affection and gives so much back in return. He is just a wonderful dog.
We are enjoying every minute with him and are just in love with our boy. He is such a great dog and has been a special addition to our family. He loves all of his long walks that he gets each day and has found quite a few toys that he just loves to play with. We like to take him on car rides and to explore new places on his walks. He continues to do well with his insulin injections and is a great eater. We have maintained his weight and are very careful with giving him treats. When he does get one, he is very happy!
Brady and I are so happy to have him and again thank you for making this happen. Lots of love to all your furry friends!"
CHARLIE'S STORY:
Handsome Charlie has been at the Rescue for a few weeks and is doing just fine. Despite his diabetes, he is an easy keeper. The folks at Academy vet were wonderful to Charlie. They diagnosed him properly and then kept him at their facility until Rescue could take him. Charlie patiently waited to leave the vet and now he is waiting for someone to love him again.
Charlie is sweet and undemanding. He walks well on leash and gets along with the other dogs. He loves exploring his surroundings. He loves to ride in the car and is a very good passenger. He is very well behaved for the vet and had a great report when recently checked. He hardly notices when he gets an injection of insulin and carries on as if there isn't any problem. We hope that someone will understand his situation and be able to give Charlie a loving home very soon.
This little guy has had it a bit rough. He was taken in by an elderly couple from some neighbors when he was 2. The couple started their own battles with dementia and Charlie was often overlooked and overfed or underfed. When the couple could no longer care for themselves, Charlie was presented to the vet for euthanasia. Thankfully the vet would not put Charlie down knowing that he had a treatable condition and that he is a sweet and good natured Wire who deserves a chance. Please come meet Charlie!

Name: Fiona
Age: 4 years Type: Wire Fox
May 25, 2011
We were thrilled to learn today that Fiona has been adopted into a perfect home according to Amy who has worked tirelessly to find Fiona a forever home. Thanks, Amy!
HELP! Fiona needs to be your one and only!!!!!
According to her rescuers, she loves people, is friendly toward children. She is good on her walks and doing well in obedience lessons. She loves the water, too! She also behaves for the groomer. Fiona is crate-trained and housebroken although a minor condition, remedied with medication, is needed to control her bladder while she sleeps. This is easily controlled especially for a young gal who is otherwise healthy and full of Wirey energy.
Fiona is currently with a rescue in Temecula, California but she is getting tired of being with the dogs thee and really wants to be in a home of her own. She had been successfully adopted out but the home had another dog in residence and Fiona didn't share well. she seems to do well meeting other dogs on leash but would rather not have to share her space with them!
If you cannot adopt but would consider fostering Fiona until a forever home becomes available, that would be wonderful for her!
Below is the best picture we have of Fiona at the moment. We are waiting for more of this special Wire girl.
To meet Fiona contact: AMY HOY at ilovecassidy94@yahoo.com

Name: Chip
Age: 8 Type: Wire Fox
Chip is pictured with Javier. They are off to his new home in El Segundo, California! We are so happy for both of them!
This is Chip! He is fresh from the shelter where he was turned in by his owner so matted that he had to be given quite a close "shave!" He is a very loving boy who is good with other dogs and very affectionate toward people. He puts his front paws around you for a hug! A bit on the chubby side, he is an easy keeper who appears very healthy for his age. He knows the doggy door, too! Mr. Chip has a nice black saddle and a stub tail and soon will grow a beautiful coat. There is a very interesting reason why Chip was given his name--a fascinating story we will be glad to share with his future adopter! Chip misses snuggling in bed with his very own person. He's handsome, HOUSEBROKEN, healthy, enjoys the companionship of people and dogs--an all around Wire wonder now just needing a home of his own! (and for his hair to grow in!) We are confident there is someone who will appreciate Chip's considerable qualities! And soon, we hope, so this boy will have a bed to call his own!
Check out the photo below where Chip found the best seat in the house -- an admirer's lap!

Name: Devon
Age: 2.5 Type: Wire Fox
Devon has been adopted and is in his new home in Murrieta!
Beth and Eric are delighted with Devon. "He truly is a good dog," Beth wrote. Devon is settling down and learning the rules of his new home. He is interviewing with K9 Companions and we're hoping he does well.
"He's a sweet child and we're so happy to have him. Zoe [his K9 companion] loves him too and she gets up every morning and runs to his crate. He's learning not to play too rough with her and she...is holding her own and putting him in his place."

Name: Dolly
Age: ? Type: Wire Fox
Dolly has been adopted into a wonderful home with Brenda, Vaughn and assorted canine friends! Dolly is now known as Molly! Dolly only spent a few days at the Rescue when Brenda and Vaughn visited and were charmed by her.
Molly is a love muffin who spend lots of time on Brenda's lap! Brenda and Vaughn are ATRA alumni with big hearts for dogs.
Molly is pictured above:with Brenda, and in additional photos with Brenda, Harley, Jackson and Brenda's son Mattand with Harley, the Wire.
WHAT A LUCKY GIRL!
Dolly came to us from the Orange County Shelter where she was listed as a stray. The shelter estimated her age as 10 but due to her energy level and the condition of her coat (beautiful markings!) we are confident she is younger. Dolly is a sweetheart who loves attention. She walks well on leash and enjoys her outings but is also content to be in your lap.
Dolly is getting along well with the other rescue dogs and hasn't been a bit of trouble. She will need some dental work soon to enhance her beautiful smile.
HELLO DOLLY!
Hope you will soon be "back where you belong" in a loving home!

Name: Ellie
Age: 4 years Type: Wire Fox
ELLIE'S FOSTER MOM FELL IN LOVE AND IS KEEPING ELLIE! WE CALL THIS A FOSTER MOM "FAILURE." WE ARE THRILLED FOR ELLIE AND SO GRATEFUL TO JILL WHO HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR THIS PRECIOUS LITTLE GIRL.
This petite Wire-girl is "cuter than Christmas!" And, Christmas came in July this year! Ellie has been on her best behavior in her foster home in Long Beach. Her foster mom describes her a a quiet girl who loves to cuddle and snuggle. However, when the leash comes out she is raring to go!
As excited as she is to go exploring, she will sit politely and patiently for her leash to be attached. She will need more training to heel on lead but is a wonderful companion for a walk in the park. Since Ellie loves to be the focus of your attention, we recommend that she be the only dog. Ellie is completely crate trained and will even retreat there on her own for a nap. Her behavior at the vet and while being groomed has been exemplary!
She loves to ride in the car and although we thought she has a very strong prey drive, she rode along with an injured bird in the car and calmly accepted her new traveling companion being taken to the vet!
She has a beautifully marked coat and lovely ginger head and a tail that loves to wag for you! With each passing day, Ellie has grown more secure and playful and we predict that she will be an easy keeper and devoted companion for an understanding Wire home.
To arrange to meet this special Wire, please fill out an application and e-mail it to sheilacallaghan@verizon.net and we will contact you.
Update: 8/15/11: As predicted, Ellie is blossoming each day. We didn't think it was possible for her to get any cuter but she has; or for her tail to wag any faster, but it is ! Her tail has an endearing crook at the very end of it that is uniquely hers and doesn't detract a bit from her beauty. Ellie's foster mom treated her to a bit of home grown tomato one night and came home the next day to find that she had gotten in the tomato patch and plucked one for herself off the vine! A typical Wire, she was able to easily elude the small garden fence and help herself to a delicacy.

Name: Harry
Age: 7 Type: Wire Fox
Hooray for Harry! He has been adopted into a GREAT home! We're just wild with happiness for our Harry!
Harry is pictured getting hugs from Emily who reports that all is going well!
Harry is a happy boy even though he had to give up the only home he had ever known for financial reasons and take up residence in Rescue because of his owner's financial hardships. Stubbed tailed and stout (although running around the Rescue grounds has helped him slim down a bit!) with one ear up and one down, Harry is mellow, with no attitude toward his fellow Wires. Harry is HOUSEBROKEN and would love to be back in a home to call his own. As you can see in the photos, Harry may be a laid back fellow but his sweater selection shows the potential for a wild and crazy guy! We're just wild about Harry and he'll be wild with gratitude if you take him home!

Name: Hoppi and Snoot
Age: 11 Type: Wire Fox
This darling pair, Hoppi and Snoot, were sadly given up by their loving, elderly caretaker when she had to leave her home and enter a nursing facility. A neighbor had promised to take care of the two dogs and he kept them with him in his truck when he drove to work each day. When the foreman on the job discovered the dogs he gave the good samaritan a choice--the dogs or the job....the kindly man was living in his truck with the dogs and felt he had no choice, He contacted Rescue and tearfully relinquished Hoppi and Snoot to us after driving from Arizona. The neighbor and the elderly owner are grateful to Rescue and keep in touch. But they would both love to hear that Hoppi and Snoot have a home of their own.
These two sweeties are our best behaved Wires. They love car rides, are HOUSEBROKEN and even good with cats! They are still active and LOVE to go for WALKS!
We would love to see this pair adopted together!
In the additional photos Hoppi is pictured by the flower pot and Snoot is standing showing off his curly tail.

Name: Jack
Age: 9 Type: Wire Fox
Jack has been adopted!
All of his training when he was fostered by Trish and her Wire, Myrna Loy resulted in his becoming a model Wire!
Then, there was a serendipitous meeting with Wire lover, Connie Vaughn at La Quinta.
Connie was waiting for just the right dog to bring her comfort after losing her beloved Wire, Shorty. Jack appeared with Trish and Myrna Loy whom Connie met last year at La Quinta. Now Jack is in a wonderful home with Connie and her husband.
Take a look at these great pictures of Jack in his new home! What a fortunate fellow!
Jack's history:
Hi Folks!
Yes, I'm Jack and I'm a GREAT Wire Fox terrier. I'm well-behaved in the house and in public, and I could spend all day getting belly rubs or giving sloppy kisses.
Like most of my breed, I respond well to firm leadership. I'm a star student at "ThankDog Bootcamp" where I get to work out with my foster parents every day. I've learned "sit," "stay," "down," "come," and "heel." Mastering all these commands makes me a great companion. (My trainer likes me so much that my new family will receive a discount for bootcamp if they live in the LA area!)
In my previous home I had separation anxiety, but my foster parents have learned that if I'm well exercised, in my crate and have a radio or TV to listen to, I'm just dandy. But, if you want to take me with you wherever you go, that's fine, too. I'm good at outdoor restaurants, in the car, in hotel rooms, heck, I'd probably be good in your office! I'm quiet....I never bark....not even when other dogs pass me!
As for other dogs...some I like, some I don't. So, I'd do best as the only dog in your home.
What else can I tell ya? I'm housetrained, up to date on shots, and I'm really handsome! So if your wanting a well-trained, highly intelligent, loveable new family member, then I'm the guy for you!
Jack unfortunately bounced back to us after being a beloved family member in a home in San Francisco. We took him back and Jack is doing his best to adjust to Rescue life and separation anxiety. A handsome and dignified fellow, Jack is HOUSEBROKEN and hoping for an understanding Wire home.
?
Jack is pictured during a break on his trip southbound from SF to the Rescue.

Name: Jimmy
Age: 2 Type: Wire Fox
Jimmy was tearfully relinquished to Rescue by his owners who had to move in with in-laws due to financial hardship. Unfortunately, Jimmy did not appreciate the hospitality extended enough to keep from resorting to typical terrier behavior and terrorizing the Chihuahuas already in residence. Jimmy is handsome and full of himself with impish energy. He is also HOUSEBROKEN! And, while the Chihuahuas apparently didn't qualify, he actually is good with mellower dogs!
Jimmy has been adopted and now lives in Washington state!
Jimmy is pictured with Curt and Casey and on his new patio in the Pacific Northwest.

Name: Liam
Age: 9 Type: Welsh
Liam is a very sweet and personable Welsh terrier. He is friendly with everyone he meets. Small but sturdy and very gentle. He needs to be housebroken but is a quick learner and with patience and consistency he will readily learn and adapt. Liam was surrendered to the Camarillo shelter along with his "consort" and daughter. Apparently, he was no longer needed to breed and was callously given up. He is now neutered and up to date on his shots. Liam needs to be given a chance to know what a loving home is after life in a kennel. He loves attention and is happy to be held and snuggle.
**************************************************************************************************************************************
We received some wonderful pictures and an update on Liam. He is making remarkable progress because of the patience and tenacity of his new family. He has undergone major dental surgery so is feeling much better. He has made tremendous strides in housebreaking in a relatively short time and he has learned to walk on leash without protest! He also has learned sit on command (sometimes) but always for a biscuit!
Our thanks to the Quattrocchi family: Paul, Ally and their Wire, Samatha (who is tolerating Liam....) for all you have done for this sweet, but neglected little guy. His heaven is with you!

Name: Kiwi
Age: 8 Type: Wire Fox
Kiwi has been adopted! GiGi and Dale Campbell opened their hearts and home in Santee, California to Kiwi.
The Campbells previously adopted Wires Duke and Daisy from us.
Here's what GiGi wrote:
"Kiwi is adorable. Kiwi fits right in with us and our lifestyle. With us she
has more freedom to be herself as she is the only dog, and loving it. She?has adjusted well. "
Looks like Kiwi has it all now including getting to swim in the pool!
Kiwi's story:
Kiwi is an 8 year young spayed female that was relinquished by her owners when they moved to Arizona. She is HOUSEBROKEN and is used to a doggie door allowing her outside access. She obeys the commands of sit, stay and come. She was raised with young boys, but kept in an outdoor kennel most of her life. When she entered rescue foster care, she quickly decided indoor living and being part of daily family life was great! She loves to settle down in a lap at night for t.v. watching, and will follow her person from room to room to check out the action. She does not like cats, but lives with an English Bull terrier! She spent the first 5 years of her life with a bark collar, so even now with no bark collar, she rarely barks. She adores men, but has learned that women are nice also. She adores a game of fetch, walks very nicely on a leash, loves a good roll on the lawn and car rides. Perhaps in a past life she was a Siamese cat as she "talks" alot with moans, groans, soft howls and growls. Although she is dog friendly, she really would like to not have to share her person's attention or love. Isn't she a cutie with her beautiful markings and her jaunty ears?

Name: Liz-Bette
Age: 3 Type: Wire Fox
Sherrie has adopted little Liz-Bette and is working patiently with her to overcome her shyness. Liz-Bette is pictured with Sherrie leaving the rescue behind and heading off for a wonderful future full of fun and adventure!
This darling, petite girl with a beautiful ginger head was surrendered to the West Valley shelter along with her Wheaten companion we named Bridgett. (Yes, we took pity on her and took her in!)
Right now Liz-bet is a little shy and skittish but she is very sweet and we are confident that with the proper attention and a little patience she will soon be fine.

Name: Lucy
Age: 3 years Type: Wire Fox
November 12, 2011
We just learned that Lucy has been adopted!
We wish her and her new family well!
COURTESY LISTING
Heeeere's Lucy! She's waiting for you in the Santa Clarita Valley--still with her owners but she needs to be the only dog or at least the only female dog as she is causing a fuss with the female Husky in the house.
Lucy's family describes her as affectionate and playful, outgoing, confident and eager to please. As any Wire she loves to dig. AND she is what we call a "water Wire" as she loves water in all its forms. She is HOUSETRAINED and crate trained and knows HOW TO USE THE DOGGIE DOOR! What a bonus! This bundle of energy will need regular, daily exercise and extra high fencing for she is one of those Wire escape artists! That's just a typical Wire! While she knows a few commands, like "sit," she needs to learn to walk on leash and , of course, that ever important (but oh so difficult for Wires!) the recall on command! She is good with OLDER children and maybe even with CATS! Lucy loves to go to the dog park but mostly to socialize with the owners and not the dogs themselves. This little girl will make someone a wonderful companion.
To meet Lucy, the e-mail contact is Abby at roguesrun@aol.com

Name: Murphy
Age: 1 year 7 months Type: Wire Fox
COURTESY LISTING
This young and handsome boy is a transplanted southerner from South Carolina who is now in Southern California (Mission Viejo). Sadly he needs to be re-homed because of a change in his owner's life and living conditions.
Murphy is a typical young Wire, very energetic and ready to romp! He will need someone with time and patience as well as the energy to match his in order to help him become a polished gentlemanly Wire.
Got tennis balls? Well, if you throw one, Murphy can catch it midair. He can do this for hours. He will bring it back and drop it in your lap when you tell him to do so! If it lands on the floor or ground, though, he will do his best to beat you to it when you try to pick it up.
Lost one? Just tell Murphy and he will search the house until he finds it for you!.
As most terriers, he loves his stuffed toys, too. Of course it has to be a terrier tough toy or he will show his love by dismembering it pretty quickly and removing the squeaker.
Like to go for walks? Murphy does too. He will stand in front of his leash in the morning until you get yourself moving! He is used to daily walks so he needs someone who will walk AND play. He is still learning his manners on leash so that's where some patience will come in.
Murphy is full of himself and, while he is appropriately submissive to large dogs, he wants to take on the smaller ones. Because of his needs, we think he would do best as the only dog.
Although he has been driven from coast to coast he is not too keen on riding in the car. He seems to tolerate it now without getting sick but once out of the car, he likes to stay out!
He is a sociable guy, loves to lick faces. He has been good with children but will only be placed with older ones.
Murphy has gotten used to sleeping on the bed and his a good boy who sleeps through the night and for as long as his companion would like. He doesn't pester to go outside.
This handsome Wire is house trained and up to date on his shots. For the home that has the energy and devotion, he will be a rewarding and fun companion.
If you are interested in meeting Murphy, please send a completed application to sheilacallaghan@verizon.net and we will arrange for you meet him with his current owner in Mission Viejo.

Name: Nickie (NikNak)
Age: 1. 5 years Type: Wire Fox
NikNak has been adopted!!!! More news soon!
We have a baby girl! Just over a year, Nickie is a bundle of energy but just as sweet as can be. She easily scales all the barriers at the Rescue making friends with everyone! This little charmer was too much for her older owner but if you can keep up with her and are ready to devote the time to train her you will be rewarded with a devoted companion for years to come. She does her best to get through the doggie door and loves to run with Annie and Josie.
Update: we're pretty sure the ears have decided to be uppers!
New pictures added: We added some pictures as a cautionary reminder that you have to be ready for anything when taking on a Wire puppy! Below, NikNak creates her own crate by chewing through the hamper in the bathroom!
And in a more recent photo she greets Minnie, a visitor to the Rescue.
NikNak has been fostered and it's been decided that she should be an ONLY dog. She is very high energy and loves all the attention for herself. NikNack's foster Mom took her through training so she has learned some basic commands AND she is HOUSETRAINED! NikNack also loves to cuddle!

Name: Regis
Age: 10 Type: Wire Fox
Regis was "adopted" today, October 26, 2011, to an eternal home where there is no suffering, debilitation nor disease. He did not pass from this world with no one to mourn him. All of us at the Rescue admired his quiet spirit and terrier tenaciousness and will miss him. Ruth said he wasn't a minute of trouble.....and so he was, to the end, a good, Wire boy.
Farewell to our regal Regis.

Name: River
Age: 5 Type: Wire Fox
Great news! River has found a home for the holidays! And, he has joined another one of our rescues, Flash!
We are thrilled for our "go with the flow" guy, River.
Here's the news and some photos from Jeff and Tina, River's family:
Hi, I just wanted to update you and let you know that River seems to be adjusting to his new life with us. He is getting along with Jackie and Flash and finding his niche around here. He still really likes to cuddle with us and he does every chance he gets. But as you can see from the attached pictures he has other interests too. He loves his walks with his new friends Flash and Jackie, while he also just likes to take a nice nap in one of the dog beds. If he not in the dog bed then he likes to lay on our bed. sometimes with Jackie and Flash and other times all by himself on top of all the pillows. But he at least tries to lend a paw and try to help and make the bed. And last but not least he loves to try and keep the squirels out of the yard with the help of Flash of course. He even will go as far as trying to climb the tree to get at them. He really is a easy going guy and is already part of the gang.
River's story:
This sweet boy was found running through the Inland Empire when his travel was interrupted by County Animal Control. The folks there reported that he was a most cooperative resident. Even in their rather crowded conditions, he got along with the other unfortunates ( all 6 of them!) who also found themselves in the same predicament and the same cage as our free spirited Wire boy.
So, we do not have much information about our River. He is in foster care at this time and in the few weeks he has been there, the reports are all good. Mostly River likes to be on your lap. He craves your love and attention. He is a bit reticent at this time so he will need your help building his confidence. He walks well on leash and gets along with other dogs. He likes to play with toys and so far he has been quiet and doesn't appear to be one of those "barky" types of Wires. River is house trained and is learning to use a doggie door. He is a good traveler in the car. He does a special "Riverdance" when he is happy to see you. He likes to follow you everywhere. Mostly though, he likes to put his head in your lap and keep you company. No matter where you go or what you do, this well behaved Wire (what a concept!) will love by your side or in your lap. River truly sees to be a "go with the flow" kind of guy!
River has had all his shots and is neutered. He has also has his teeth cleaned so his kisses are fresh and sweet. During the dental surgery, he received a pedicure and, fortunately, the vet removed 3! foxtails from his left ear so he has been spared any further painful reminders of his time on the run. He has also been groomed and is just as handsome as can be. He has a beautiful black saddle and ginger head.
No one came to claim this handsome, unassuming boy. Won't you be the one to give him his forever home? He is such a good boy his foster Mom would love to keep him but she is out of room!

Name: Roscoe
Age: 1-3 years Type: Wire Fox
Roscoe is our newest arrival from "up north" in Santa Barbara County. His first rescue came when Maggie saw him and a Yorkie buddy running down the street and she was able to get them both safely into her car. Since neither had identification, she took them to the shelter in hopes that they would be claimed. When that didn't happen, Maggie came to Roscoe's rescue again. She had kept tabs on him and learned that it was unlikely the shelter would put him up for adoption. As can often happen, his terrier temperment and tenacity were misinterpreted and misunderstood. With only hours to spare before the shelter planned to make a decision that would have ended this sweet pup's life, Maggie stepped in again and contacted us. She paid Roscoe's fees (including neutering) and took him home until she was able to transport him to us. He was kept safely away from her kitties and therefore, was a very good house guest.
Roscoe is a typical young Wire, full of energy and curiosity. He is playful and happy-go-lucky but will jump into your lap for some attention. He is crate trained but will need help with housebreaking, learning to heel on the leash and to increase his repertoire of commands beyond "sit!" He is intelligent and eager to learn and will do well with an energetic, terrier savvy adopter. We are sure there is someone out there who will be Roscoe's third and final rescuer and give him the wonderful home he deserves.
ROSCOE HAS A WONDERFUL WIRE HOME IN TEMECULA WITH THE SMITHS. WE ARE THRILLED FOR HIM! BELOW ARE PICTURES OF ROSCOE WITH HIS NEW FAMILY AND IN HIS NEW HOME. THERE WAS A GIANT WELCOME SIGN IN THE YARD AND LOVING ARMS AND LAPS AWAITING HIM!

Name: Robyn
Age: 5 Type: Welsh
Sweet little Robin was also rescued from a puppy mill situation in Yucca Valley this past August. She had been neglected there and needed treatment for ear infections. She is mellow and quiet and Flash (who is just the opposite!) has taken quite a shine to her She is already learning about the doggy door and adjusting to life outside of a puppy mill crate. Her ears will always need to be monitored but just a month of treatment alleviated her suffering and, as is typical of so many loving dogs, she holds no grudges against humans even though she was not properly loved and cared for.
Robin has been adopted!
Here's her story:
Robyn has been adopted by Nanci and Ken Powell. Nanci helped Ruth with all of the puppy mill rescues. Robyn is pictured above with her new family: Nanci, Ken, Annie, 13 an ATRA Wire alumna adopted eleven and a half years ago! And Otto, a Wire hair Dachsund. Don't they make a wonderful wirey trio? Nanci reports that Robyn is healthy and happy. Housebreaking was accomplished quite easily and all of the dogs are getting along just fine.

Name: Spike
Age: 2 Type: Wire Fox
ADOPTED!
Spike is now Winston! Christine Humphrey is his new, "Mom!" In the pictures below, Spike is welcomed home, relaxes with a toy after his bath and finds his place on the sofa in his new home.
Winston/Spike's Story:
This handsome boy has it all--looks, charm, AND manners. Spike was adopted out of a Los Angeles shelter to someone who could not appreciate or keep up with a Wire. And Spike is actually an exemplary Wire! He listens well (really!), is crate-trained, and HOUSEBROKEN! He is affectionate and easy-going and gets along with the other Wires. He is very respectful toward the elder Wires. He never starts a fight with his peers although he has shown interest should a rumble start! Spike has a beautiful black saddle and just enough of a tail to let you know what a happy fella he is. All he needs is someone to love!

Name: Tibbs
Age: 5-6 Type: Wire Fox
Mr. Tibbs came to us via the Riverside County shelter. He had landed there on other occasions because he "outfoxed" his owners and escaped. Sadly, in November, 2009 no one claimed him. He had a brief respite at another rescue but was a little too much with the other dogs there.
Tibbs is a people dog who loves to engage you in play. However, with other dogs he manifests a typical Wire "in your face" attitude with any perceived rival. Therefore, we recommend Tibbs be the only dog and he will reward you with his devotion.
Tibbs rides well in a car so he would make a great companion on the road. Just make sure he is securely by your side on leash since, as referenced above, the open road has called to Tibbs before!
TO ADOPT TIBBS OR ANY OF OUR TERRIERS, PLEASE:
1) FILL OUT AN APPLICATION AND E-MAIL OR SEND (fax 805 494-1255 or PO Box 824 Somis, CA 93066) TO ATRA
2) ARRANGE FOR A VISIT AND A HOME CHECK
3) BEFORE TAKING YOUR DOG HOME, PLEASE DONATE ($300 MINIMUM) TO HELP WITH RESCUE EXPENSES
