Annie has been a resident at the Rescue for almost four years. She had been purchased at a pet store and then given up to us by her owner because she was "not the right dog." Annie is dominant and intense but has mellowed over the years. She shares space with Josie, our shy Airedale mix. Annie is still very active and loves to patrol the hill behind the Rescue as well as go for walks down the road from the Rescue. When avocados are in season, she will bring Pete a daily avocado gift. Annie would probably do best as the only dog in your life and she has patiently waited for that spot! Annie is pictured in her favorite armchair reflecting on the day's events!

April is Ariel's slightly portlier sister. She was also rescued from a puppy mill situation. Because of that, she was initially fearful when she came to our Rescue. Now, however, she is playful and sweet. She is not an alpha girl but gets along with the other terriers! She is, however, tentative when she meets new people and just learning what a leash is for. She's not quite sure what a doggy door is for...that's one obstacle she'll need some help with! Given her resilient and compliant attitude, we're sure she'll do her best to learn quickly and please a loving family. April will ned someone devoted to helping her overcome her unfortunate start in life.

HERE IS A GREAT LITTLE GUY! Cecil was rescued from a situation where he was an outside dog and had to sleep under a car to keep warm! :( The owner moved away and left this sweet boy behind.
Now he is being fostered in Glendale, California and waiting for a home where he will be loved and appreciated. While he loves to watch Animal Planet on TV, his very favorite thing to do is CUDDLE! He is very mellow, cute and lovable. He is also SMART! ( A common trait among Wires!)
He learned to use a doggie door in just one day! Cecil is HOUSETRAINED and just wants to please. He was placed in a home but the female Wire already in residence there picked on him and there was a bit of a tussle. However, Cecil himself gets along with other dogs (there are three in his foster home). He is mellow (especially for a Wire!)
This is a wonderful little Wire! Because of abandonment and placement that didn't work out, Cecil is a bit insecure and will need patience and guidance in dealing with separation issues. His ideal placement would be with a person who is experienced in dealing with such issues and who can be with Cecil most of the time. So, someone who is retired or who works from home and can have this boy by their side for much of the day would be a wonderful gift to this deserving Wire.
Please contact Jason at 216 577- 1737 or jason.shroyer@mac.com.
Cecil is a quiet and reticent boy but he won't allow himself to be bullied by the other dogs. Although he is older and undemanding, he was left at the Downey shelter (SEACCA) in deplorable condition. Now quite the handsome gentleman, Cecil has an endearing manner that is sure to make you smile. Cecil is just the right size to make for easy walking together or to pick up and hug. Cecil is such a sweet boy, he deserves to have a home where he is loved and cared for properly to make up for the time he spent being neglected. His forgiving nature should be rewarded with a loving home to call his own. Won't you be the one to give this boy the happy years he deserves? You could be the one to make it all up to Cecil!
In our latest photo below, Cecil and Princess "work it out" in a playful tug of war!

Holly received her name because she came to us during the Christmas season from the Long Beach shelter. The shelter thought she was a senior because of her teeth but they were wrong and so were we! Poor Holly was passed over for younger dogs and now six years later she is still with the Rescue. She is a good, happy girl who is crate trained and still loves to play. She gets along with all of the dogs at the Rescue except for Ginger and even that is mellowing a bit, How nice it would be if Holly could live out her remaining time in a home of her own. She is still very playful and loves to go on walks. She is pictured below on a walk with her pal Penney.

Sweet little Jenny has been through so much. She was taken to the West Los Angeles shelter as a stray and despite a micro chip, she was never reunited with her owner.
Perhaps that is for the best since she needed to have extensive dental work and an excision from her leg. Thanks to a generous donation from rescuers in Washington state, we were able to take care of her as soon as she came into Rescue. Jenny is recovering nicely. She is acclimating to the rescue while healing, is unassuming and reserved and tentative at this time. It would be so nice for Jenny to be adopted and have a caring home of her own--perhaps for the first time in her life! With comfort and care, her true Wire personality could blossom!
In her main photo, Tom Millington provides Jenny with some much needed TLC.

We have added a new photo of Milou entitled, "Milou Takes a Stand." This photo, taken by volunteer Debra, shows Milou triumphant after "drowning" his toy. Just about every week, volunteer Nanci brings Milou a new toy. And, every week it is his ritual to run around the yard with it about ten times. Then he takes it to the bushes where he efficiently "dispatches" it (that is, tear it up). Finally, he heads to the water bowl for his final coup de gras when he dunks it and "drowns" it.We are thinking of offering Milou as a dog toy tester to manufacturers who think thay have created an indestructible toy. Many, however, have not been terrier tested!
Milou is quite a character: active, spunky, a terror with toys but will jump in your lap for approval once his work is done!
Un bon homme, our Milou, for Milou is the name of a Wire in an old French cartoon! Our Gallic charmer loves to run and will entertain himself and others by playing solo with any ball. Perhaps it is his exotic name, but Milou feels a bit superior to the other dogs. Top dog, he is, and woe to any challenger to what he believe is his rightful title. Milou came to us after just such a skirmish via a Pasadena shelter . So we think Milou would do best as the adored "only dog" and firmly believe that he has a future in agility (individual!) or just learning tricks from a patient and understanding Wire lover. Milou has been practicing agility with one of our devoted volunteers and he really is quite impressive. Also check out his earth dog potential in our ATRA news entry. Even better, come meet this talented, handsome boy!
Nicky (came to us as Nikita) is a typical wire whose owner had to give him up due to divorce and financial reasons. Because Nikita does not have experience with other animals he would do best as an only dog. He is HOUSEBROKEN, loves to play ball, go for walks, and ride in the car. According to his owner he knows sit, stay and down command. He is an easy keeper with a good appetite and, while very active, he likes his naps.
Nicky is a cute boy with beautiful markings and just the right size. Nicky has had some isues with aggression, however and therefore requires special handling and behavior modification.

Princess was rescued from a shelter in Carlsbad where sadly she was taken after her elderly caretaker died. Remarkably resilient in adapting to the Rescue life of sharing with other dogs after a privileged upbringing, our very own Princess in residence is obedient and HOUSEBROKEN! Her rotund figure was evidence that she had been indulged and rewarded. Now she has slimmed down a bit but has become proficient at counter surfing and scouring for edibles on her own! Princess will need a special diet as protein has been detected in her urine.

Here's the latest boy to find his way to us: RIDER!
Rider was surrendered to the Castaic Animal Shelter by his tearful elderly owner who had to go into a residential facility and did not know of any other option for him. He was dearly loved and his owner was, as any animal lover can understand, heartbroken. Fortunately, the shelter alerted us and our volunteer, Nanci Powell, immediately drove the many miles to get him. Nanci was able to reassure the owner that we would do our best for Rider which was immensely comforting to his distraught caretaker.
Rider is quite the character. We call him "Easy Rider" but when the water is turned on, so is Rider! He loves to jump in and out of the wading pool at the Rescue so fast that my camera couldn't always catch the action without blurring! He'll even grab onto the water bucket and turn it into his very own play toy.
After he has emptied the water out of it, he herds it around the grounds and amuses himself! If sixty is the new forty, then Rider's ten years is more like 5. We know that Wires tend to live long lives so even at ten, Rider has lots of love and laughs to offer. The only bucket he plans to "kick" is the one at the Rescue he is having so much fun with!
Rider has been vet checked and needs thyroid medication but is otherwise in good health. We are treating him for a common skin condition which we expect will easily clear up. He has a beautifully marked coat. We are going to make sure he gets some more exercise to shed a few pounds. Otherwise Rider is ready to ride off with you. He is ready made for you to love! He can't wait to be doted on once again and while he tolerates sharing attention, he would really prefer to give and have undivided attention as he had until he had to leave the only home he knew.
Sam's former family left him behind in Carlsbad when they moved away. Sam is a handsome fellow who has adapted quietly and quickly to life at the Rescue and is polite to his fellow Wires. Our pictures just don't do justice to his good looks but we'll keep trying! His one ear up, on down gives him an appealing, jaunty look. He has taken a bit of a shine to Princess. He loves his walks and does well on leash. Friendly and undemanding, it appears that Sam is also housebroken. This mellow fellow would probably adapt quickly to his new home and be very grateful for one that will be there for him forever.

Name: Ginger Age: 11
Ginger is actually a terrier mix who was mistaken as an Irish terrier at the East Valley (LA City) Shelter. Fearing that she would be put down, we took her into Rescue. Ginger is HOUSEBROKEN and OBEDIENT and HEALTHY! She has been sadly overlooked because she is a mix. She is a keen hunter so she could earn her keep if you need a dog to protect your property from four-legged interlopers! She also would be a loyal and loving companion.

Josie was rescued from the LA County Shelter located in Baldwin Park which unfortunately has a high euthanasia rate. We could not leave her to an uncertain fate. So, even though she is a Airedale mix we took her in. Initially, Josie was so shy and fearful that she literally spent her time in the closet in one of the bedrooms at the Rescue. Now, however she has "come out of the closet!"
She feels much more secure, although she needs time and patience to adapt to new people and situations. She weathered the recent evacuation of the rescue for fires and has made wonderful improvements. She is HOUSEBROKEN, very healthy and playful. In the first picture, Josie is peering out form the closet. Our most recent picture shows her with baby NicNak ?perhaps sharing some girl talk as they hang out on the bed together! Two cute girls!

Here's a BIG Airedale love muffin for you! Pete craves your attention and will return it many times over. Pete is probably deaf but the extent needs to be verified. We have been using hand signals with him with varied results. Well, he is a terrier after all! Taking him for a walk is like an E-ticket ride a Disneyland. Remember those? He loves to go exploring and use that nose. He is not aggressive with the other dogs, loves his chews and romping around. He's a massive boy who could easily bowl you over if you are not prepared for his exuberance. He acts like a BIG puppy who will greet you with love and enthusiasm each day.
Pete is now being fostered by Jana in Orange County. He is having a great time there learning some manners and romping with the animals. He still prefers humans over his animal friends. He is a handsome, active boy waiting for an Airedale lover to be his one and only.
