Birdie  |  A Wonderful Foster “Failure”

Birdie came to ATRA all the way from Utah. We partnered with American Fox Terrier Rescue to assist Birdie’s family in placing her in a more appropriate home. Though dearly loved, Birdie’s Wire Fox exuberance and door dashing proved difficult for her family with young children to adequately handle.

Birdie frequently escaped when a door was opened and, as is typical of Wires, and did not have any sense of recall at all. She narrowly escaped some skirmishes and dangers that caused the family a lot of worry and anxiety. Sadly, they made the decision to place Birdie.

Grateful for ATRA’s help, they drove her all the way to her foster home in Seal Beach, arriving there on June 7, 2025. Birdie definitely lucked out with her foster mom, Jill. Jill is a very experienced Wire lover who is very familiar with Wire Fox antics. Jill made sure her home was very secure–no escape routes for Birdie! And, going above and beyond, Jill enrolled Birdie in school for obedience and day care for socialization in addition to training at home.

It was inevitable that there was mutual love between Birdie and Jill and sure enough, Jill became what we jokingly call a “foster failure.” Instead of adopting out, the foster becomes the forever home for their foster. Given all Jill has done for Birdie, we knew we couldn’t find a better home. Jill has adopted from us, and has volunteered and been generous with donations through many years. We at ATRA are so happy that she has opened her heart and home to love another Wire. We cannot think of a more deserving adopter.
